Does this model have push/pull knobs to switch between single/humbucker?

BEST ANSWER: No. Neck pup is warm and good. Bridge pup a little lacking, but good enough. No need for me to change anything, and I'm a Seymour Duncan guy. Overall good quality, not as good as Epi but good enough.

Not as good as an Epiphone? It's better than some Epiphone's, not as good as others. I had a dot studio and got rid of it because it sounded like mud compared to the boardwalk.

BEST ANSWER: This is a semi hollow body guitar. It arrived several weeks ago. I own over 20 guitars all of which are American Fenders, Gibsons Gretch and PRS. It is a very good value with good action and intonation. The frets needed to be polished and the tuning pegs needed tightening , the posts that hold the bridge in place needed some glue as they were loose. Once I made all the adjustments it became a fairly decent playable guitar probably worth twice the price. Don't expect this to be as good as a Gibson ES 335 which would cost 10 times as much.

Because it feels heavier in the rear than I anticipated I expect it is NOT fully hollow. I think there is a solid beam going right down the middle inside. It might be the hardware however but I don't remember my Gibson ES330 being that rear heavy but that was many years ago.

If you read the Monoprice description of this guitar, you'll see that it is a real "hollowbody guitar. Of course, it needs to have some internal blocking and bracing to make it sturdy, and this guitar has that.

I bought the Tele style guitar, and I replaced the pickups without playing them. You may think this invalidates my opinion, but no; everything that matters on these guitars rocks! The frets are nice (sand the edges of need be) the neck is the fastest and smoothest I’ve encountered, and the body is heavy and high quality. I replaced tuners and pickups, but I have $200 into this guitar, and it outplays anything less than a g&l. Squier and other knockoffs don’t stand a chance. I do plan to buy many many more guitars from monoprice!

I understand your frustration, but these guitars are very popular and they only make limited amounts in each run - doesn’t mean that they sell out b/c people are buying large amounts to re-sell. Get on the email waiting list like everyone else, you’ll get notified as soon as they’re available again, and you can get your own.

The guitars are made in china however there not like the chinese double neck I bought from china direct last year. The flamed boardwalk I can't speak to. I bought the Black boardwalk I replaced the bridge otherwise I love it; I've played lead since 1974. Own a 58 Les Paul 2014 hist I tweaked it to match that without any trouble it came setup very well, tuners and pickups are very good. Light weight a GOOD PRICE. Even the gig bag which I've never used gig bags is Impressive. If you're looking for a guitar of this style you won't do better at Monoprice. Good Luck to you !!

Not sure what is coming loose, but usually what has come loose is the nut around the jack. To tighten this, you will have to take the jack plate off, and hold onto the inside of the jack with a plyers or wrench to prevent the jack from spinning as you tighten the nut. It should take a 12mm socket to tighten. BTW, for the cost of these guitars, this should be expected; although it has not happened to mine. BTW, one of the reasons I bought this particular guitar is because of the jackplate. Tightening that nut with the jack on the top, with no access except through the f hole would be a nightmare.

It's an issue of tightening the nut on the outside of the body and not a soldering issue at all. Check to make sure the hex nut is still on the outside and hasn't loosened enough to have been lost. If that nut is lost, contact the company for another one. They are pretty much universal in size.

You can pull the old jack out and check for a loose connection. Be prepared to solder if necessary. If that doesn't work, check all the wiring and make sure everything is grounded properly. Still doesn't work? Get a new jack and heat up your soldering iron.

Simple answer is yes; however electric guitars are designed to be played through an amplifier. When you play the guitar through an amp everything is amplified, this is the "natural" sound for the electric guitar unlike an acoustic guitar, which is designed to be played without an amp. I've found that in order to maintain a comfortable consistency in the playing, one should always use the amplifier when playing the electric guitar even if it's a semi hollow.

- Victor C on Oct 8, 2025
IMHO, the short answer is no. This, of course, depends greatly on your definition of "good". While the semi-hollow is slightly more resonant than an unamplified solid body, the notes and chords still do not ring like a true hollow body. That being said, I personally appreciate the unamplified "felt" resonance of the guitar making it a fantastic couch guitar for me. I hope that was helpful :)

Hi,
The Boardwalk plays well without an amplifier. I practice without an amp regularly. Note, however, that because this guitar is semi-hollow, it has a solid piece of wood running down the center of the body and is not as deep as a standard acoustic guitar, it will not produce high volumes or a full bodied acoustic sound. For practice purposes it sounds fine and pleasing.

I'm confused by the control knobs on the 335 style boadwalk. There are 4 and a 3 way pickup switch. However when I am in the middle position, with both pickups on, the bridge pickup volume does nothing. If the neck pickup is at 0, then I get no volume when using what I think is the bridge volume. If I select the bridge pickup then I get volume changes from that knob. Can anyone advise?

BEST ANSWER: Whatever volume knob you turn on the other knob becomes like the master volume and you can't have one pickup louder then the other they both have same amount of output when in the middle position on select switch. I bought a new wiring set and pots and replaced them and now it works like it should. You can get a decent cheap set on ebay for 30 bucks and that will fix it like it's supposed to be and then this guitar will play really nice for the price I paid for it

Try to lower main volume then slowly shift the pickup lever on what you desire to use. Rapid shift results delayed reaction or sometimes no sound at all. Adjust all knobs on medium range while shifting the pickup lever until all gets into place depending on your timing as well.

It is wired like a Gibson. If the selector is in the middle, the volume must be up for each pickup in order for it to work. The pots are wired in series as far as I know.

You want to play an electric guitar, UNamplified?.
It will sound like any unamplified electric guitar: horrible.
I can only guess that you're confusing a hollow body guitar with the latest acoustic-electric guitars(Yamaha makes some models I believe) that can be played both acoustically and then as an electric guitar?.
This guitar is not such a design.

It is unamplified. Only 1 gain really works with amp. Amp needs to be cranked up high to even hear it.

It's a solid core for sure but I am presuming laminated mat's for back and sides given the price. I will tell you this guitar plays wonderfully, action, feel and tone - so for the price I don't think you can go wrong if they are set up this way.

Monoprice would have one listed separately if they had it.
They do, or did, have a couple of other lefty guitars, the Strat copy and maybe the Tele copy as well. Check them out.

Would a pickguard design for the Gibson ES-335 fit this guitar?
A shopper
on Sep 3, 2019
The distance between the plastic pickup surrounds is 2 3/8 inch. That is the same as the distance for the Les Paul and the ES I think. Pick guards are cheep and so is this guitar so try it. The mounting bracket is adjustable. You can always cut a custom guard yourself if you have to.

They're not as far as I can tell. I'm answering this question just from my physical observation and from having filed some of the edges of the frets.

Great quality and sound for the money, needed some professional setup as expected. The only exception to excellent rating was a plastic rather than a bone nut, but customer service resolved via compensation. All and all, a very good value.

Indio Boardwalk
The guitar was basically what I expected it to be for the money. It was a good value. The guitar had string buzz out of the box and required a new nut because the grooves were cut too deep. So, I purchased a bone nut and adjusted to torsion bar on the neck and it was fine. The only thing is I believe the guitar I received was previously sent and returned. Which I understand that happens but I don't think it was really addressed as to why it was returned. With all that said it was still a bargain and I would recommend this guitar as a good starter guitar and it sounds quite good,

I bought the Amber version. For the price, I'm very pleased.
Amber semi-hollow body. Got it on sale so I'm pretty happy with the price. I've found several small issues so far (after 4 weeks). Pros and cons:
Pros:
1. I love the color - bright yellow/amber.
2. The size and weight are very close to a Gibson 355 which it is styled after.
3. The pickups are bright/hot and the tone pots produce a wide range in the tone.
4. The guitar was somewhat setup right out of the box (but it needed some work).
Cons:
1. Frets were not dress well and there were sharp edges on the underside of the neck starting at ~ the 10th fret.
2. The finish is either printed or a laminate. It has a couple of flaws right on the front of the body.
3. I had to adjust the neck until the truss bar was loose - no room left for adjustment in that direction.
4. Setting the intonation also used up all of the available space on the bridge.
5. I have to retune often - long past the point where the strings should be stretched and settled.

Gorgeous Smokey Grey Guitar
Nice sustain on notes. Especially, on my tube amp. Neck is straight. Tuners are decent. After, breaking in new strings . But, I will probably replace with locking tuners anyways. Price was amazing and it came with a soft padded gig bag. The only thing I would say needs a little work is fret ends. But, it's ok because I can sand/polish myself. I understand workers only have a certain amount of time on building these guitars.

Beautiful Guitar, Issues with Quality Control
This guitar is gorgeous. The only reason this isn't a 5 star review is that I had to return two guitars before getting a great 3rd one. The first guitar had glue by the nut, and while the product description says the guitars are setup in California, the guitar had clearly not been setup. There was considerable buzz from the low E, A and D strings and the action was super low, the nut appeared to have been cut too low. The second guitar lacked any sunburst at all on the back, and had an issue with a chipped inlay with what looked like a broken corner on one of the inlays. It also did not appear to have been setup, with a similar issue with strings buzzing. The third guitar is beautiful, and arrived with the strings wrapped and a D'Addario tag (which the other two did not have). It also had an allen wrench included, which was different from the first two. The action was much higher on the third guitar and just needed tuning. I think there are issues with the quality control group and some guitars not actually being setup in the states, but the third guitar is absolutely gorgeous and looks and plays beautifully. Hopefully Monoprice can sort out the quality control and be more consistent with their setup process. All that said, Monoprice made the return process for the first two guitars with issues painless.

Amazing value
I ordered this guitar and am kind of blown away by the value. The action was a little low when I got it but easily fixed. Fretboard needs just a bit of love, but for the price, you're not going to find a better semi-hollow. I love it.
